Resist the urge to cut back those Echinacea seed heads! They’re a fantastic natural food source for birds during autumn and winter and look stunning against the frost. By leaving them in place, you’re adding beauty and supporting garden wildlife at the same time. #GardenOnARoll #Echinacea #WildlifeFriendly #AutumnGarden #GardenTips | Garden on a Roll

🐦 9 Plants Not To Cut in Fall: Birds Need Them for Winter 1) Coneflowers (Echinacea) • Leave seed heads standing through winter. • Cut back only in early spring. 2) Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia) • Keep dark seed heads until late winter. • Goldfinches & chickadees feed on them. 3) Sunflowers (Helianthus) • Large seed heads = natural bird feeders. • If stalks flop, lay them down or prop up. 4) Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium) • Tall seed heads feed small birds. • Foliage adds snow-cover shelter. 5) Gold

Perennials- cut back now or later? When perennials die back and go dormant in the winter months, like echinacea, black-eyed Susan, gaillardia, etc, many of these plants can provide a nutritious food source for your local wildlife. However, you might want to clean up your garden before winter and you're not sure what to do. Watch this video from Allison at @spokengarden (zone 9a PNW) to learn how to identify which perennial flowers are ready to be cut back, or those that you might choose to wai

This year was the first year I started cutting back perennial blooms at planting time and I’ve noticed a huge difference. 😬 I wish I didn’t notice a huge difference in plant health because it’s very painful 😖 —- but the perennials that were cut back that I planted this year (nepeta, coneflower, rudbeckia) took off with amazing growth vs the plants I left blooms/buds on. It makes sense. Flowers require a lot of energy to produce and a plant only has so much. Unfortunately, the best use of a pla

Deadheading is just cutting off or removing dead blooms. It promotes more blooms because the plants want to create seeds to continue to exist and spread themselves around, and those come from the flowers as they age and dry up. If you cut them off they try to produce more so this is nice for us because it extends the bloom time and certain plants are also producing more food for wildlife, and that’s important. The plants can use their energy to produce new blooms and it looks nicer for us. (I ac

Do you have any catmint? If you are not aware, you can cut it back and it will regrow and re-bloom. Plants want to create seeds and seeds come from flowers. If you cut the dead flowers off before the plant has enough time to produce seeds it will start again. You don’t have to do this but it’s fun to see something regenerate and provide new blooms. They won’t be as full as the first round but it you have the time, I suggest tryingt it! I also suggest tucking the cut stems around the base of the

The wait is officially over! Here is part 1 of a highly requested video! (Normal speed) filleting because a lot of you said in my last 256 lb halibut video that 3.5x speed is way too fast. Also that you all will be willing to watch longer videos from me which means a lot. More than you all know. With that, thanks for always being here to support and watching my videos! Come back for part 2 where I fillet the eyed (brown) side of this 256 lb halibut! This was a very fun fish to break down and is

Perennial salvia is one of those “plant it once, love it forever” staples 🌿 • Hardiness: Zones 4–9 (perfect for NJ gardens) • Blooms: Late spring through summer — cut it back after the first flush for a repeat show • Sun: Full sun is best (the more sun, the more blooms) • Companions: Pair with coneflower, coreopsis, yarrow, ornamental grasses, or roses for a pollinator-packed garden • Feeding: Low maintenance — a light dose of slow-release fertilizer in spring is plenty (too much = floppy growt
